  1250   13" 27 1/4"     Tunneled 5th   40/studs     Heel   rosewood   Likely a British knock off.  Many-shoed rims such as this were ridiculed as tubs by Stewart  The stamp font is not Stewart.  The tunneled 5th in lieu of neck peg is a Brit feature and uncharacteristic for Stewart.  The tiny heel is uncharacteristic for Stewart.  The neck to peghead transition is uncharacteristic for Stewart.  Bone nut , if original, is uncharacteristic for Stewart.   3/5/2019 £400   Joe Hornung

  6183 Universal Favorite Custom. Recycled serial number? 11" 27"       20 24   ivory ebony cap   cherry Archon Library Accession no: 2017.1209154.012 Uni Fav Custom ? or Monogram/Other post-1900 era ? - 20 frets & 24 shoe rim , same as a No 2 c. 1889,  but dowel stamps are not right for c. 1889:  No TM Stamp; No SSS Stamp; No ivoroid SSS tag; serial is stamped on dowel's side rather than front; see dowel for 7388 with stamps that  look right for  1889-1890 period; SSS decal on rim : is this a post 1900 banjo from period when serials were recycled ?  Nameplate on the brace is Universal Favorite with a stamp on the inside of the shell, S.S. Stewart, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The fingerboard is extensively and beautifully inlaid with pearl, silver wire, brass and copper. It has a cherry neck and simple heel of ebony plate. The ivory tailpiece is original and the remainder of the instrument is all original with the exception of the tuning pegs. Non-Stewart maple  dowel that has no TM, name, or serial stamps ; ivoroid tag let-in to dowel with poor workmanship; no stamps visible on rim in photos. Being generous, could be Orch 2 neck and rim with replaced dowel, but we don't really know that..  Neck brace, snakewood pot, looks like Orch No 2 neck w/carved heel.
