Stewart Banjo Archive
This database of banjos made by Samuel Stewart was collected over the last 20 years by people interested in Stewart's banjos. Special thanks are extended to all of them, and they are noted in the Images Attribution column, the Source Text Data column, and in the URL column. Details about each banjo are not always correct, as many times they are made by people not familiar with banjos. Corrections and additions are welcome, contact me through the Banjo Hangout. Please read about the way the database is constructed below.
There are two primary databases. The first one consists of banjos made during Stewart's lifetime in his shop, and lists serial numbers of known Stewart made banjos from 1000 to 20,000. The second one consists of banjos with serial numbers from 50,000 up, likely made after Stewart's death by George Bauer. Further historical information about this can be found on the Mugwumps website.
The top two rows in the database, the headers, have links in many columns that will take you to a page further illustrating details of that aspect of the banjos, with photos of details. Below the header, each row depicts one banjo, and if the image of the banjo is available, you can view it by clicking the serial number of the banjo. Additional images are available for some details of that banjo by clicking the underlined text in that row.
The model description published by Stewart can be viewed by clicking the model name of the banjo in the Model column for each banjo. Early Stewart banjos did not have a model name tag, and the equivalent model name has been entered when it is clear what the model is from the specifications otherwise a generic name is given.
The approximate first year of manufacture of the banjos is listed in the first column, estimated by Shawn McSweeny in his BHO post.
There is an additional database that consists of Banjos with the Stewart name associated with them, but are not included in these two databases. The serial numbers are unknown. The database can be accessed here.
